New Learning Experience

Here's a new fun activity for kids that really warms my heart!

"Welcome to Little Librarian!  Little Librarian is the first personal library kit made just for kids! It encourages reading and is powered by creativity and imagination, not batteries! Little Librarian provides book lovers with everything they need to transform their book collection into a library. Kids can practice the important skills of organizing, sharing, borrowing, and returning. Book pockets, check out cards, library cards, and bookmarks are just like the ones from the real library. Little Librarians will issue overdue notices and awards. Favorite books can be stored in the reading journal and shared with friends.

To get started just add books!"

Are You A Majority Reader?

Harris Poll did an online poll asking 2,775 adults if they read and if they do, which genres. About 3/4ths responded they had read at least one fiction and one non-fiction book in the last year. Can you guess what the most popular genres were for fiction readers?

48% read mystery/thriller/crime
26% read science fiction
24% read literature
21% read romance
11% read graphic novels

Are you surprised by the results? Personally, I thought romance would have been higher. But I am pleasantly surprised by the number of science fiction readers.

Nobel Prize in Literature 2010

The Nobel Prize in Literature was announced this morning. The winner is Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. According to the official website of the Nobel Prize, Vargas Llosa was chosen "for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".

I have put his book, The War of the End of the World, on the Good Read display shelf for those interested in checking it out. This book takes place in late nineteenth century Canudos, Brazil. It is a book about a society of outcasts with no laws who fight against the establishment of government.

Check out the current and past Nobel Prize winners at http://nobelprize.org/.
